 United States

B-2 Tourist Visa
Students visiting the US may study part-time (maximum 16 hours per week) on a B-2 tourist visa. Students may apply at the US Embassy or Consulate by including their Letter of Acceptance in the visa application. Medical examinations may be required in some countries to obtain a B-2 visa.

 Visa Waiver
Students from certain countries may study on the visa waiver program. Students receive a visa waiver stamp from the US Immigration Service at the US Port of Entry normally with a length of stay of 90 days (varies upon the country). Visa waivers cannot be extended. Part-time students on a visa waiver must end their English study and leave the US when the visa waiver period finishes.

 F-1 Student Visa
Students who intend to study full-time must obtain an F-1 student visa. To issue an I-20 form, US Immigration requires that the student provide a copy of a bank statement to the school. Incomplete I-20 forms may constitute grounds for visa denial depending on the discretion of the Embassy or Consulate officer.

Students are encouraged to provide information that demonstrates strong ties to their home countries (financial, professional, community...).
Students and parents are recommended to write letters to the US Embassy or Consulate that clearly explain the purpose for English study and how English study fits into the student’s larger life plans and career goals.

Letters of support from prospective or actual employers or university or college administrators that can verify future employment are considered very helpful to obtain F-1 student visas.
Please contact us for more information.

Students should choose a starting date that allows enough time to safely apply for the F-1 student visa.
When a student’s F-1 visa expires, he/she may legally continue to study provided that he/she is still enrolled in a full-time course at SGV Honolulu.
Medical examinations may be required by the US Embassy or Consulate in some countries.

For further information please check out the US Travel Visa and Embassy web-site.

 United Kingdom

Who needs entry clearance in order to travel to the UK?
Before arriving in the UK, the nationals of certain countries must obtain entry clearance, which permits them to travel to the UK and present themselves at a port of entry. These countries, known as ‘visa-national ’countries, are determined by the British Government. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) web site features a visa enquiry form where applicants can check if they require a visa, go to http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1006977149953

The visa national list featured in the Immigration Rules (HC395) is available on the Home Office web site at http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/ and is also available in the UKCOSA Manual and its online version, Onyx. Additions to the list are notified to UKCOSA members through UKCOSA Briefings.

Students who are not ‘visa nationals ’can choose whether to apply for entry clearance, or not. They may wish to consider this if they are coming on a course lasting six months or less, they are applying as a prospective student, or they are bringing their wife, husband or children with them. The advantages of applying for this are that clearance and arrival procedures in the UK may be faster and less problematic, and if they are refused entry, students can appeal against the refusal and remain in the UK while the appeal is pending.

How do students apply for entry clearance?
International students should apply for entry clearance at a British Mission in the country of their nationality, or the country in which they are living. They should ask for forms IM2A, IM2S and the Application for United Kingdom entry clearance information sheet, which are free of charge, although they will have to pay a fee later. The forms are also available on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office web site at http://www.fco.gov.uk/. They should carefully complete the application forms with the assistance of the first steps British Council guidance note – preparing for entry clearance. Then students must take or post* the completed forms to the British Mission, together with their passport, two recent passport-sized photographs, the application fee in local currency (which is non-refundable), and the relevant documents showing that they meet the requirements of the Immigration Rules for students (see opposite).

* please check first with the British Mission whether it offers a postal visa service.
