Health Insurance
All international students in
Canada must have health insurance. Medical coverage available to
international students varies from province to province. In
provinces where international students are not covered under provincial
health care plans, students must arrange for private health insurance
coverage.
Canadian Health Insurance for International Students (tm)
The Canadian Education Centre Network is pleased to be working with Ingle
International to provide international students with access to
comprehensive health insurance for any study destination in Canada.
Ingle International offers
complete-coverage policies as well as policies that supplement the
provincial medical coverage available in some provinces. All policies
include 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week assistance for international
students. Coverage is available for hospital and doctors visits, air

University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP®)
Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan
Who is Eligible?
Residents of Alberta and their dependants are eligible for coverage under
the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Exceptions are noted below. No
eligible Alberta resident will be denied coverage.
Residents are defined as “persons lawfully entitled to be, or to remain in
Canada, who make their home and are ordinarily present in Alberta.”
Tourists, transients and visitors are not covered by the Alberta Health
Care Insurance Plan.
When you move to Alberta from another province, there is a short waiting
period before you become eligible for coverage under the Alberta Health
Care Insurance Plan (more information about moving).
Dependants are defined as:
Eligible dependants that may be registered under one account are:
a married spouse (husband or wife).
an adult interdependent partner
single dependant children under 21 years of age.
single dependant children under 25 years of age, who are full time
students.
single children over 21 years of age, who are wholly dependent due
to physical/mental disability.
Members of the Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and
people serving time in a federal penitentiary have their health services
covered by the federal government. Their dependants living in Alberta must
be registered.
In the case of separation or divorce, the parent with custody registers
the children as dependant(s).
Adult Interdependent Relationships
Couples who are not married may
register under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan as adult
interdependent partners.
An adult interdependent partner is
a person who lives together with another person in a relationship of
interdependence:
for a continuous period of not less than 3 years, or
of some permanence, if there is a child of the relationship by birth or
adoption, or
if the registrant and partner have entered into an adult interdependent
partner agreement.
An adult interdependent partner agreement is
a written agreement between any two persons who are living together or
intend to live together in a relationship of interdependence, as provided
for in the Adult Interdependent Relationships Act.
A person may not enter into an adult interdependent partner agreement if
the person:
is a party to an existing adult interdependent partner agreement,
is married, or is a minor, unless the minor is at least 16 years of age,
and the minor's guardian(s) gave prior written consent.

Alberta has a publicly administered and funded health care system that
guarantees Albertans receive universal access to medically necessary
hospital and medical services.
Coverage is offered through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan
BRITISH COLUMBIA
Who is
Eligible?
An individual must be a resident of B.C. in order to qualify for medical
coverage under MSP. A resident is a person who meets all of the following
conditions:
must be a citizen of Canada or be lawfully admitted to Canada for
permanent residence;
must make his or her home in B.C.;
must be physically present in B.C. at least 6 months in a calendar year;
and
dependents of MSP beneficiaries are eligible for coverage if they are
residents of B.C.
Certain other individuals, such as some holders of study and/or work
permits issued under the federal Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
are deemed to be residents, but tourists or visitors to B.C. do not
qualify. If you are uncertain about your eligibility status, contact MSP
for assistance.
Dependent - includes a spouse and children
who are B.C. residents.
Spouse - means a resident who is either
married to or is living and cohabiting in a marriage-like relationship
with the applicant and may be of the same gender as the applicant. (Note:
in the case of divorce, the former spouse is no longer eligible for
coverage as a dependent and must apply for separate coverage.)
Child - means a resident who is the legal
ward or child of the applicant, is supported by the applicant, is neither
married nor living and cohabiting in a marriage-like relationship, and is
either age 18 or younger or age 19 to 24 and attending school or
university full-time.
Saskatchewan
Special Classes of Newcomers
Saskatchewan Health covers health services for certain special classes of
newcomers from outside Canada who move to Saskatchewan on or before the
first day of the third calendar month after arriving in Canada. If you are
among the groups identified below, you may be eligible for benefits from
the date you move to Saskatchewan:
international students
landed immigrants
people discharged from the Canadian Forces and the RCMP
non-immigrants who are in Canada in connection with their trade or
profession
returning spouse of a Canadian Forces member
returning Canadian citizens
returning residents

Manitoba
To be eligible for Manitoba Health coverage you must:
Be a Canadian citizen or have Immigration status as outlined in The Health
Services Insurance Act
Establish a permanent residence in Manitoba, and
Reside (physically) in Manitoba six months in a calendar year
The following are not eligible for coverage:
tourists
transients
visitors
students other than Manitoba residents
Students temporarily absent from other countries or other provinces and
territories in Canada to attend educational institutions in Manitoba are
not eligible for registration with the Manitoba Health Plan.
