TEACHER TRAINING

The Saxoncourt FELT course was designed to equip graduates intending to teach with Shane English Schools in Japan, China or Taiwan with the skills necessary to survive in the classroom. It provides a basic procedural and methodological framework for general English teaching at elementary to intermediate levels.

In London, the course is provided FREE of charge to graduates who have been made a formal offer of a teaching position in Japan, China or Taiwan. By the end of the course, successful trainees will be able to:

bulletplan and stage lessons that focus on new or recycled language
bulletplan and stage lessons that focus on receptive skills work
bulletmanage a classroom effectively, using pair and group work
bulletexplore a range of visual signalling techniques
bulletwork from a coursebook, selecting and adapting tasks.

In Cape Town, the course costs ZAR 750 for non-recruited teachers and ZAR 200 for recruited teachers. Accommodation can be arranged on request. Note: 1 GBP = 11.7 ZAR approximately (October 2003 interbank exchange rate).

The course is delivered over five days and totals 35 hours. This makes for a busy schedule, both for trainees and for tutor (s).

Content of the course includes:

bulletdaily Teaching Practice sessions with feedback
bullettwo live observations of experienced teachers
bulleta variety of input sessions.

The following areas will be covered in the input sessions:

  1. description and practical exploration of the PPP/CRA model
  2. ways to present new language ways to practice language
  3. accuracy vs fluency
  4. three LA sessions that explore form, function/meaning and phonology
  5. a separate session on phonology (phonemes, stress and intonation)
  6. exploiting skills work
  7. working with vocabulary
  8. concept checking
  9. error correction (oral and written)
  10. 1:1 and small group work
  11. recycling and revision
  12. young learners
  13. published materials

Pre-course work
Although not compulsory, it is recommended that trainees:

Please remember that the FELT course is free for those who have had a formal offer of a position with Shane English Schools Japan, Taiwan or China. Any offer is conditional on full attendance and satisfactory performance on the course. Trainees who subsequently do not take up the position will be charged the full course fees.
