Kanchanaburi
 |
Kanchanaburi is a small town on
the Kwae River. Buses from the southern bus terminal (Sai tai mai) leave
every half hour or so and take around two hours. It is a pleasant place
to spend a few days and home to the famous bridge over the river kwae.
There are various spin off's from this such as light shows and museums.

 |
Guest Houses:
Many guesthouses lie right on the river offering great views. All are
accessible by motorbike taxi from the bus station. (around 10 or 20
baht). Honda dreams are a great way to zip around the town and
surrounding countryside. These are about 200 baht for 24 hrs.
Jolly Frog - Very popular with great food and clean rooms which go for
between 100 and 150. The restaurant also plays movies in the evening. A
well kept lawn leads down to the river. |
 |
VN Guest House -
Cheap and friendly. Small rooms on a houseboat on the river are 50 baht
while bigger rooms set back from the river go for around 150 a double.
This guesthouse has a lovely elevated restaurant looking out over the
river. |
 |
Rick's Lodge -
Slightly more expensive than V.N, Rick's lodge is more of the same only
slightly more classy.
Mr. T's - Almost exclusively Thai guests and a lovely lawn leading onto
the river. Again cheap rooms.

Koh Chang
Koh Chang is a beautiful destination with long sandy beaches and a
jungle interior. It is part of the Koh Chang national park in Trat
province close to Cambodia and can be reached within a day from Bangkok.
Buses leave regularly from Ekamai bus station (The eastern bus Terminal)
in Bangkok and take around 5 hours to reach Trat town in itself an
interesting town with lots of trade between the neighboring countries. A
songthaew from Trat town to Laem Ngop on the coast takes around 20
minutes and from here it is around a one and a half hour boat ride to
Koh Chang proper.
The most popular beach is White sands ( Had sai cow) which has a lovely
long stretch of beach and a shallow sea. Be careful of jelly fish in the
wet season especially the dangerous Mangaproon fire. Cheap bungalows
abound on this beach.
The next beach along Ao Khlong Phroe is also very beautiful with more up
market bungalows. A word of caution; be careful what you bring back from
Koh Chang as it is not uncommon for tourists to be searched by police
when returning to Ekamai bus station.
